Gene and Linda's wedding seems to bring out the best in Castle Perilous . . . even if that's not much better than the worst. When the happy groom suddenly prefers confronting barbarians over entertaining his wedding guests, a battle ensues that will change his life, infuriate his bride, and make for one bizarre wedding day!

when you've got a castle that is home to 144,000 alternate worlds, it is likely something will go wrong. But Castle Perilous has gone awry, dumping its guests into wildly unlikely worlds, and unless Lord Incarnadir can pull the plug, he is going to be facing the empty walls of Castle Kidnapped

'We reap and we thresh; grain for half the world. We are the Grain Kings raised of old.'They call them the Grain Kings. Gigantic mechanical monarchs of the wheat-bearing plains that were once the frozen Alaskan wastes. Whole eco-systems in themselves, they can supply the food so desperately needed by the teeming millions of our overpopulated planet. But even now, as the whole world waits in hungry suspense, the great powers battle for control of the prairies and two competing combine harvesters find they are heading on a course of collision. A collision with catastrophic consequences - not only for the hundreds of crewmen aboard each massive machine but for the future survival of all mankind.

One of the most prolific and gifted writers in a very fast field. For science fiction is really where it's at these days. In fact, anyone not writing s.f. is clearly out-of-step. In this arena, Laumer is close to being one of the old-timers (no pun intended despite the theme of this collection). He is, quite simply, very good indeed and one helluva lot of fun to read. Contents: The Timesweepers • (1969) • novelette The Devil You Don't • (1970) • novelette The Time Thieves • (1972) • novelette (aka The Star-Sent Knaves) The Other Sky • (1968) • novella (aka The Further Sky) Mind Out of Time • (1968) • shortstory(less)

The waves flung up against the purple glowof double sleeplessness. Along the piersthe ships return; but sailing I would gothrough double rings of fire, double fears. So therefore let your bright vaults heave the nightabout with ropes of wind and points of light, and say, as all the rolling stars go, "Ihave stood my feet on rock and seen the sky."—These are the opening lines from The Galactica, by the one-armed poet Geo, the epic of the conflicts of Leptar and Aptor

Away and Beyond (1952) is vintage van Vogt, with 7 good stories:"The Vault of the Beast" (1940) An implacable shape changing alienmonster from Mars is defeated by a flight of van Vogtian super mathematics. The Great Engine (1943) is interesting, but not one of the great tales. **The Great Judge (1948) is a brief P.K. Dickian tale ***Secret Unattainable (1942) includes Hitler's secret weapon, a good story. ***"The Harmonizer" (1944) A Stapledonian vignette which compresses eighty million years in a few pages. The Second Solution (1942)- is a good beast tale. ***"Film Library" (1946) A particularly vivid "hard SF" dream which is not about anything but itself. *Asylum (1942) - not just a vampire tale, but a PK Dickian story! ****
