The material presented is based on fieldwork carried out in Ayutthaya, Central Thailand, a provincial capital 50 miles north of Bangkok, and itself the capital of the old kingdom Siam. The author describes and analyses the socio-economic and ritual relations existing between the monk and the lay community. She also analyses the internal structure of the monasteries and the relations between monks of the same and of different communities
