Mäkipirtin ikkunasta on itsenäinen jatko Lea Honkasen esikoiskirjalle Brisbanen pappilan ikkunasta. Uutuudessa isä ja tytär muistelevat tekstiensä välityksellä elämänvaiheitaan siitä lähtien, kun Viipurista oli ollut pakko lähteä. Heidän matkansa suuntautui Satakunnan Laviaan, ja sieltä kaukaisiin maihin. Isän muistoista merkittävän osan muodostavat sotien aikaiset päiväkirjamerkinnät, tyttären sotaa käytiin Etiopiassa Haile Selassien kukistumisen aikaan. Afrikasta matka jatkui Australiaan ja sieltä takasin kotiin, Laviaan.
